| Sun conure price |

I really love the look of sun conures they look amazing, and I was just wondering how expensive they are to buy? Not that I will be getting one just yet but it's a definite consideration for the future when I have some more room and money. Also what are they like as pets? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks. |

I don't have one. I have heard really good things about them & the Jenday. It is a toss up which is gentler. They can get along with other conures. They can be trained really well in things like Recall. A breeder told me - Conures are in your face birds - never a quiet or alone moment when you have one. [my Budgies will go & entertain themselves or pester you - not all the time]
The breeder I know says she won't sell one unless the people come to her aviary & walk by to hear what a bunch sounds like. She figures if that doesn't put them off they have potential. She also works with the baby going - however long the new owners want it & If I was getting a bird I'd want a breeder like that one. She also believes in parent raised birds. They get to be birds & see people as freinds not as birds' parents.
Being Conures - they can be loud & nippy. They can chew really well so it important to give them chew toys. They are also very affectionate & total goof balls. They are beautiful - no doubt. They aren't big but I would be looking at a big cage & lots of out time - that goes for all birds of course. They like bathing - from all I've seen.
Their talking ability is limited. They don't sing.
I would recommend checking out species forums all over & reading about them in depth.
I remember the days of research I did as I looked around for that perfect bird. All I can say is be cautious - this is a long-time thing. |

thanks homebird for your help. I will definitely do the research before getting one but that probably won't be for a while yet. Anyone have any ideas on the price of one or the price of a Jenday? |

I'd imagine our Sun has a pretty typical personality so I'll mention a few things about him that may be helpful.
We paid a few hundred dollars (US) for our Stewie. In our minds, he's pretty much the coolest bird ever. He was hatched Jan. 17th, 08. He says a few words and strings them into short sentences when he feels like it (such as "step up, Stewie, good boy" not always in that order heh). He's a complete sillyhead and loves toys he can swing from, shake and make noise with. Bells are a big hit with him. He also loves colorful wooden chew blocks, rawhide and rope toys. He spends most of his waking hours upside down and is always doing goofy things to try and make us laugh. He doesn't always have to be the center of attention, but he insists on being around at least one of us most of the time. he likes to feel included in everything, including showers, Stew loves water. He has also chosen a firm bedtime of just before sunset. He gets very cranky if he's disturbed during sleep time. He's also a late riser. I'm up with the sun, he doesn't begin to stir until aprox 9 a.m. most days. Stew doesn't bite, but he does love to mouth people a lot. And if you have a mole, hangnail, or anything else eye catching he will merrily try to remove it for you (he's getting better about going after my nosering and earrings, but if they sparkle just right, they're fair game). Our breeder told us that when he's about 2 yrs old he's going to go through a biting stage. We're really looking forward to that heh.
I'm of the mind that the largest cage possible is best, no matter how much outside time is availible. I figure there's always going to be an off day where they spend a lot of time caged for whatever reason. And a bored Sun is an annoying sun (just like anything else). Lots of room for toys and different perches can be a big help.
If you live in an appartment, or you have neighbors close by, a Sun could be a problem due to their insanly loud and ear peircing scream. Stewie doesn't scream often, but he does belt out a few when he's excited (like when I get home from work, or when he feels he's being neglected). If he's on my shoulder when he lets one out, my ear rings for a few seconds.
All in all they're really a great bird. If you have the time and space they can be so rewarding and quickly become an active member of the family.
Hope this was somewhat helpful... |

Yes thanks that was helpful. Yes I have heard from many places that they're complete goofballs and that's part of the appeal for me! I love that sort of bird. Well I think they are definitely a bird to consider for the future for me. Thanks homebird and pelwyn for your comments! |
